A Phlebotomist or a phlebotomy technician is a health care professional whose job is to collect samples of blood from patients so that it can be examined in a laboratory and diagnosed for possible illnesses. After drawing out the blood, a Phlebotomist must ensure its transportation to the laboratory where the analysis of the specimen is to be performed. These professionals usually work under laboratory technologists or other healthcare professionals. Their working locations include hospitals, clinical laboratories, nursing homes, community health centers, blood donation centers, physician’s offices and other medical facilities. Since the job involves inserting a needle into the vein of the patients, the Phlebotomist must be extremely careful, focused and accurate.
Nature Of Work
As mentioned earlier, the primary responsibility of a Phlebotomist is to draw blood from the patients and transport the samples to the correct clinical laboratories. Blood samples are collected not only for analysis, but also for donations, research and transfusions. The Phlebotomist collects blood by inserting a needle into the vein (venipuncture) or by skin puncture. As such, this job demands accuracy, patience and ability to work under pressure. Many people are afraid of needles and so it is the duty of a Phlebotomist to calm down the patients during the process of blood collection. The other responsibilities of phlebotomists include sanitizing and assembling the equipments, patient data entry, and labeling and storing blood samples. While taking blood samples, it is important that these professionals take extreme care to avoid direct blood contact. This is to prevent the contraction of possible infectious diseases like hepatitis and HIV.
How To Become A Phlebotomist
In order to become a Phlebotomist, you must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent for example GED. The next step is to enroll in a training program at an accredited institution like a technical school or college. Completion of this training program earns the candidate, a diploma or certificate. After completing the training program, you can choose to obtain certification and licensure. Certifications can be obtained from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Society of Clinical Pathologists or the American Association of Medical Personnel. Some states require the candidate to be licensed in order to legally work as a Phlebotomist.
Salary Of A Phlebotomist
The average salary of a Phlebotomist is expected to be around $30,116 per annum. This is actually an excellent amount that an entry level medical professional gets, considering the fact that the professionals don’t need a four year graduate degree. There are many factors that influence the salary of a Phlebotomist such as experience, certification, location, and the type of employer. The median salary of a Phlebotomist is about $20.56 per hour. While the lowest earned amount is about $13.50 per hour, the highest is around $25.00 per hour.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the healthcare industry is expanding at a rapid pace with millions of job opportunities being added every year. This growth is projected to continue through 2018, which means that the Phlebotomist career outlook appears to be very promising. The BLS also predicts an employment growth of 14% for the phlebotomy technician job through 2018 and the demand for these professionals will probably be higher than the actual number of professionals who are qualified.
